Dear Citizens of Duxbury,

High speed Internet is becoming increasingly important for our residents and home businesses. We know that the majority of our residents and businesses use dial up for internet access, which is exceedingly slow and cumbersome compared to high speed connections available elsewhere.

Currently there are only a handful of residents who have access to DSL or Cable Modem. We feel that it is time that we explore the possibilities for broadband services for all the residents of Duxbury and we’re convinced that the benefits would be tremendous. People who work with computers at home could send and receive large documents, including critical software updates and fixes and small local businesses would be able to effectively reach a wider selection of providers and customers. Our students would have access to more immediate information to enhance their education and connect them to our global society.

So far we have mobilized a group of residents in the North Duxbury Area consisting of over twenty households who support us in our efforts to explore our options. We are aware that the town of Duxbury is a diverse landscape and what may work for our area may not be the most efficient or cost affective approach for South Duxbury. We would like to reach out to all residents in the hope that we can create a voice on the minds of all parties concerned with providing Broadband Service for all of Vermont.

The Citizens for Duxbury Broadband has secured assistance from the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) to explore broadband options for our area. VCRD will provide us with funding for incidental expenses, such as this survey, as well as manpower to help us research possible solutions. There are also state and federal grant programs available to assist with implementing a rural broadband service here. One requirement for grant funds or for approaching a private provider is to establish the demand for high speed Internet in Duxbury. You need to help us with this by identifying the location of the homes and businesses where broadband is wanted. Please let us know if you are interested in high speed Internet by completing the survey at Broadband Interest Registration. It is important that we hear from both our part-time and full-time residents.

Responding to this survey does not commit you to subscribing to a broadband service – it will merely assist us in measuring the level and location of potential usage. We will neither publish, nor disclose to anyone, your individual survey responses, but we will contact you once we learn more about options for broadband service in Newark. If you have any questions, please e-mail the project at info@DuxburyBroadband.org .

Sincerely,

Citizens for Duxbury Broadband
